Rioja – Bodegas Puelles

This month, you’re being treated to a unique wine education and tasting event.  As many of you know, Rikki and I visited Spain in July.  One of the highlights of our trip was a two night stay a the small family-owned estate winery, Bodegas Puelles in the town of Abalós in Rioja Alta.  The winery is run by Jesús Puelles, a larger than life character that brings to mind the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World.  The vineyards are planted in a valley that descends from the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains and are organically farmed by Jesús and his brother Félix.

We’ll be sharing our experience at the bodega and we’ll taste 7 of their outstanding wines, some of which are not available in the States.  Our lineup will include:  2 blancos and 5 tintos made in two different styles: ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’.

Our greeting wine is also something unusual, Txakolina from Basque Country in Northern Spain along the coast.  The wine is made from the grape Hondarribi Zuri and bottled with residual carbonic acid that gives the wine a natural spritz.

The per-person cost will be approximately $20. Please bring a few extra $1 bills just in case we have less than 18 attendees.

Please bring hors-d’oeuvres to share.  Here are a few sites for inspiration:

Parking:  There is plenty of street parking on Whitmarsh Ave.  Park on both sides of the street, just don’t block any driveways.

Bookings are closed for this event.
